Skim & SCUMM

SCUMM! A word to set hearts racing all over the graphic adventure game world. Everybody wants it, noone knows how to get it...

Well, no longer!

If you're at all interested in SCUMM, the first thing you will want is:

[LNK]ScummVM
ScummVM is a freeware interpreter for SCUMM files. It will allow you to play most LucasArts games on just about any platform. It can cope with V5 and V6 games, although work is undergoing on the other versions. It was written by Ludvig Strigeus and a whole bunch of other people. Check it out, it's really kewl.

So you've played the commercial games. I wonder, you think. How does this stuff work?

[TXT]The inCompleat SCUMM Reference Guide
Being a Partially Compleat and Mostly Accurate guide to the SCUMM Engine data file Format for Versions Five and Six (and above)

Still work in progress. I am currently working on browsing through the ScummVM code and finding out the details on how everything works, and writing it up. If you want to contribute, please let me know.

[BIN]skim-0.1.zip (40924 bytes)
A early, non-useful snapshot of my Skim SCUMM decompiler/compiler toolkit. Only useful if you want tools for manipulating SCUMM files in Java.

So, you've just downloaded ScummVM and you want something to do with it. Of course, you could go out and buy one of LucasArts' releases of their adventure games, or download Beneath a Steel Sky or something like that, but chances are you just want to try it out. You'll be wanting one of these, then.

This is a collection of freely available games and programs that run under ScummVM (not necessarily SCUMM based). Mostly, they're just demos for games. I'm collecting them here because the two sites that used to keep them have died (files.mixnmojo.com and www.lucasfiles.com). Hopefully, they will eventually get hosted on a real web site somewhere. Be nice to my bandwidth.

Also, please don't send me any queries about how to get them running. Contact the ScummVM developers for that.

[BIN]zakstdemo.zip (95956 bytes)
Demo of Zak McKraken and the Alien Mindbenders. Use ScummVM's zak setting.

[BIN]pass.zip (668826 bytes)
Passport to Adventure. A combination interactive demo of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Monkey Island and Loom. pass setting. EGA graphics.

[BIN]indy3ega-demo.zip (193219 bytes)
Non-interactive demo of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. indy3ega setting.

[BIN]mi_demo2.zip (230308 bytes)
Playable demo of The Secret of Monkey Island, EGA version. monkeyega setting. Doesn't seem to work properly under ScummVM 0.5.0.

[BIN]loom-demo.zip (451103 bytes)
Non-interactive demo of Loom. loom setting.

[BIN]mi2demo.zip (1752127 bytes)
Demo of Monkey Island II: LeChuck's Revenge. mi2demo setting. Seems not to work under ScummVM 0.5.0.

[BIN]playfate.zip (709076 bytes)
Playable demo of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. playfate setting.

[BIN]fate.zip (931877 bytes)
Non-interactive talkie demo of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. fate setting. Includes voices, but you won't thank the voice actors.

[BIN]dott-demo.zip (1022856 bytes)
Non-interactive talkie demo of Day of the Tentacle. dottdemo setting.

[BIN]samdemo.zip (1063005 bytes)
Very short non-interactive talkie demo of Sam and Max Hit the Road. samdemo setting.

[BIN]snmdemo.zip (1064069 bytes)
Interactive non-talkie demo of Sam and Max Hit the Road. snmdemo setting.

[BIN]snmidemo.zip (2505597 bytes)
Interactive non-talkie demo of Sam and Max Hit the Road. snmidemo setting. This would appear to be an internal prerelease, and is interestingly different from the other demo.

The following demos by AdventureSoft will run on ScummVM but don't use the SCUMM engine.

[BIN]simon1demo.zip (580956 bytes)
Interactive non-talkie demo of Simon the Sorceror. simon1demo setting.

[BIN]simon2demo.zip (15355900 bytes)
Interactive talkie demo of Simon the Sorceror II. simon2talkie setting.

These games were produced by Humungous Entertainment, formed by Ron Gilbert and some other Lucasarts people to write children's games. They licensed the SCUMM engine from Lucasarts and did some fairly major modifications. They're mostly only partially supported by ScummVM.

[BIN]fatdemo.zip (1202662 bytes)
Interactive talkie demo of Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise. fbdemo setting. Only partially working.

[BIN]puttpara.zip (1220438 bytes)
Interactive talkie demo of Putt Putt Joins The Parade. puttdemo setting. Working and apparently completable, but a little buggy.

[BIN]moondemo.zip (1259260 bytes)
Interactive talkie demo of Putt Putt Goes To The Moon. moondemo setting. Working and completable, but rather buggy.

Originally the only PC versions of the SCUMM games used EGA colours. The VGA versions actually came via an obscure Japanese console called FM Towns (warning: page links to a machine translation of a Japanese page. Anyone know any English information on the FM Towns? And if Japanese is too much for you, here are pictures of one).

[BIN]indy4demo.zip (2209590 bytes)
Non-interactive talkie demo of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. indydemo setting.

[BIN]indyloom.zip (3925914 bytes)
Non-interactive demo of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. indyloom setting. No sound, no music, or at least not yet.

[BIN]indyzak.zip (2000073 bytes)
A minor variation on the above.

[BIN]zakloom.zip (3100736 bytes)
Non-interactive slideshow demo of Zak McKraken and the Alien Mindbenders and Loom. zak256 setting. Thrill to the VGA graphics!
